1. Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulator Trial – Abbott Embed
Embed:
What it Treats
A dorsal root ganglion spinal cord stimulator trial is used to evaluate pain relief for patients with chronic, localized nerve pain that has not responded to other treatments. It is commonly recommended for conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and focal neuropathic pain.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure involves placing temporary stimulation leads near the dorsal root ganglion using imaging guidance. These leads are connected to an external stimulator that delivers mild electrical signals to help block pain signals, allowing the patient and physician to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy before considering permanent implantation.
2. Intrathecal Pump Trial
What it Treats
An intrathecal pump trial is used to evaluate whether delivering medication directly into the spinal fluid can effectively relieve chronic pain or spasticity. It is typically recommended for patients who have not achieved adequate relief with oral medications or other treatments.
How the Procedure Is Performed
During the trial, a temporary catheter is placed into the intrathecal space surrounding the spinal cord using sterile technique and imaging guidance. Medication, such as an opioid or baclofen, is delivered directly to the spinal fluid to assess pain or spasticity relief. The results of the trial help determine whether a permanent intrathecal pump implant would be beneficial.
3. Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial
What it Treats
A spinal cord stimulator trial is used to evaluate whether electrical stimulation of the spinal cord can relieve chronic pain in the back, legs, or arms. It is typically recommended for patients who have not achieved adequate relief from medications or other conservative treatments.
How the Procedure Is Performed
During the trial, temporary leads are placed in the epidural space near the spinal cord using imaging guidance. These leads are connected to an external stimulator that delivers mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, which help block pain signals. The trial period allows the patient and physician to assess pain relief and determine whether a permanent spinal cord stimulator implant would be beneficial.
