Device Revision Procedures
1. Intrathecal Pump Removal
What it Treats
An intrathecal pump removal is performed when the pump is no longer needed, is malfunctioning, or needs replacement. It may be recommended if the patient’s pain or spasticity can be managed with other treatments, or if the device requires maintenance or upgrade.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is performed using sterile technique, typically under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision over the pump site, carefully disconnects the catheter from the pump, and removes the device. The area is then closed and dressed, allowing the site to heal while ensuring minimal disruption to the intrathecal catheter if it will remain in place for future therapy. 2. Intrathecal Pump Replacement
What it Treats
An intrathecal pump replacement is performed when the existing pump reaches the end of its battery life, malfunctions, or requires upgrading. The procedure ensures continued long-term management of chronic pain or severe spasticity.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is performed using sterile technique, typically under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon removes the old pump and replaces it with a new device, reconnecting the catheter to deliver medication into the intrathecal space. The new pump is then programmed to provide continuous or on-demand medication delivery, maintaining precise control over pain or spasticity management.
3. Spinal Cord Stimulator Lead Revision
What it Treats
A spinal cord stimulator lead revision is performed to correct issues with the implanted leads, such as lead migration, breakage, or inadequate pain coverage. It is typically recommended for patients whose existing SCS system is not providing optimal pain relief.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is performed using imaging guidance to locate and adjust or replace the existing SCS leads in the epidural space. The leads are repositioned or replaced as needed, and the system is tested to ensure proper stimulation and effective pain coverage. This helps restore or optimize the pain-relieving function of the spinal cord stimulator. 4. Spinal Cord Stimulator IPG Replacement
4. Spinal Cord Stimulator IPG Replacement
What it Treats
An SCS IPG replacement is performed when the implanted pulse generator reaches the end of its battery life, malfunctions, or requires an upgrade. The procedure ensures continued long-term management of chronic pain in the back, legs, or arms.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is performed using sterile technique, typically under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon removes the old pulse generator and replaces it with a new device, reconnecting it to the existing leads. The new IPG is programmed to deliver controlled electrical pulses, maintaining or optimizing pain relief for the patient.
